Calgary Root Planing—Stop Gum Disease & Protect Your Smile

Root Planing

Gum disease can lead to serious dental issues if left untreated. Root planing, also known as deep gum cleaning, is a non-surgical treatment that removes plaque and bacteria from under the gums. The process helps protect your teeth and gums from disease. At Oasis Smile Dental, we provide gentle and effective root planing in Calgary to keep your smile healthy.

What is Scaling & Root Planing?

Scaling and root planing are two essential steps in deep cleaning to treat gum disease.

  • Scaling removes plaque, tartar, and bacteria from the tooth surfaces and beneath the gumline using specialized dental tools.
  • Root Planing smooths the tooth roots to help gums reattach and prevent bacteria from building up again.

Together, these procedures stop gum disease from progressing and promote healthier gums.

Signs You May Need Root Planing

Gum disease often progresses without obvious symptoms. However, some warning signs include:

  • Red, swollen, or bleeding gums
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Receding gums (teeth appear longer)
  • Sensitive teeth or pain while chewing
  • Loose teeth

If you notice any of these signs, early treatment can help prevent further damage.

Why Root Planing is Important for Gum Health

Gum disease doesn’t just affect your teeth—it can lead to:

  • Bone loss around the teeth
  • Increased risk of infection
  • Higher chance of tooth loss
  • Links to serious health issues, including heart disease and diabetes

If gum disease is untreated, it may require more advanced treatments.

How the Root Planing Procedure Works

Our root planing procedure is performed with precision and care to ensure comfort and effectiveness.

Step-by-Step Process:

  1. Assessment: A thorough gum examination to identify affected areas.
  2. Scaling: Removal of plaque, tartar, and bacteria below the gumline.
  3. Root Planing: Smoothing of the tooth roots to help gums reattach.
  4. Antibacterial Treatment: Application of antimicrobial agents to prevent infection.
  5. Healing & Aftercare: Detailed post-care instructions for a smooth recovery.

The procedure may require local anesthesia to ensure a comfortable experience.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Is root planing painful?

The procedure is done under local anesthesia, so you won’t feel pain. Some mild sensitivity may occur after treatment, but it subsides within a few days.

Can I eat after root planing?

Avoid crunchy, spicy, and acidic foods for 24 hours. Stick to soft foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, and soups.

How soon will I see results?

The healing time depends on how severe the gum disease is and how quickly your body recovers. Most people see less gum inflammation and better oral health within a few weeks after treatment.

Can gum disease come back after root planing?

With proper oral hygiene and regular check-ups, gum disease can be effectively managed and prevented from returning.

Will my gums grow back after scaling and root planing?

Gums won’t regrow, but the procedure helps reduce inflammation so the gums can reattach to the teeth, preventing further recession.
